On April 30, 2025, members of the Trent University Faculty Association (TUFA) were proud to celebrate the achievements of our colleagues at the fifth annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence in Teaching & Research, held in the Student Centre. Hosted by the Trent Teaching Commons and the Office of Research & Innovation, this event honoured the recipients of the 2024/25 Teaching and Research Awards of Excellence. These awards highlight the extraordinary talent, innovation, and dedication of faculty members whose teaching, research, and mentorship continue to shape academic life at Trent. TUFA applauds the contributions of these outstanding educators and researchers, whose work exemplifies the high standards and collegial spirit of our faculty community.
2024/25 Award Recipients
Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching
- David Riegert, Mathematics & Statistics
Recognized for his innovative teaching methods and ability to foster dynamic and inclusive learning environments. His approachable style and dedication to student success have left a lasting impact on learners across disciplines.
Distinguished Research Award
- Dr. Marguerite A. Xenopoulos, Biology
Honoured for her groundbreaking research in freshwater ecology and her leadership in habitat restoration and ecosystem management. Her work continues to shape global conservation practices and inspire emerging researchers.
Award for Educational Leadership & Innovation
- Dr. Joanna Freeland, Biology
Celebrated for her leadership in course and program development, commitment to equity and inclusion, and innovation in curriculum design across departments. Her efforts have significantly enhanced learning pathways at Trent.
Early Career Researcher Awards
- Dr. Mary-Claire Buell, Trent School of the Environment & Forensic Science
Recognized for her pioneering work combining Indigenous Knowledge with western science in ecotoxicological risk assessment and environmental research.
- Dr. Melanie Rosen, Philosophy
Acknowledged for her research in the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, with a focus on dreaming and interdisciplinary scholarship.
- Dr. Stephanie Tobin, Biology
Awarded for her research on cellular aging and repair mechanisms, and for fostering collaborative student engagement in science.
Award for Excellence in Online Teaching
- Dr. George Kovacs, Ancient Greek & Roman Studies
Celebrated for his imaginative approach to online course design, including a “choose your own adventure” format that enhances engagement and self-directed learning.
Award for Excellence in Teaching Assistance
- Mark Trumble, Mathematics & Statistics
Recognized for his clarity in teaching complex material, patience, and dedication to supporting student learning in tutorials and labs.
CUPE 3908-1 Award for Excellence in Teaching
- Dr. Paul Mazzocchi, Political Studies
Honoured for his dynamic and thought-provoking teaching style, which challenges students to think critically and engage deeply with course material.
In addition to their academic accomplishments, Dr. Marguerite Xenopoulos and Dr. George Kovacs should be applauded for their advocacy and leadership within TUFA. Dr. Xenopoulos serves on the TUFA Bargaining Team, where she plays a key role in representing faculty interests and negotiating fair and equitable working conditions. Dr. Kovacs recently completed a two-year term as Member-at-Large on the TUFA Executive Committee, where he contributed to strategic decision-making and policy development in support of faculty well-being and academic integrity. Their activism underscores a deep commitment not only to excellence in research and teaching, but also to fostering a fair, inclusive, and collaborative academic community at Trent.
