Sector Update / Tonight’s Zoom cancelled

Dear Colleagues,

This has been an extraordinary couple of weeks for developments with relevance to the sector and our own negotiations with the Employer. Specifically, TUFA Officers and Bargaining Team members are turning our collective minds to the implications of the following.

  1. Superior Court decision finding Bill 124 to be contrary to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and therefore “void and of no effect.” Bill 124, of course, was the compensation restraint legislation that limited wage/benefit increases to 1%/year across the broader public sector and our provincial affiliate was among the consortium of union organizations that challenged this legislation in court. OCUFA’s statement following Justice Koehnen’s decision is available here.
  1. Special Report of the Auditor General on Laurentian University and the subsequent unsealing of correspondence between the Minister of Colleges and Universities and the President of Laurentian University.
  1. 2022 Report of the Auditor General, and its value-for-Money audit of Financial Management in Ontario Universities (Algoma, Nipissing, OntarioTech, and Windsor, specifically).

Our Bargaining Team met with the Employer last night and has scheduled a full-day of bargaining for this Sunday. With so much going on we have decided to cancel the Zoom meeting arranged for this evening and will instead provide members with a thorough briefing on all these developments at our General Membership meeting on Monday December 12th (Zoom from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm).

In Solidarity,

Moira and Marcus
